Guest Blog: Flowing with Laughter

Have you ever thought about ‘creative health’ and how engaging with arts & culture can benefit your wellbeing? Since we first learned about this fascinating field of study, we’ve been taking our role as creative health providers a bit more seriously. And we have found other advocates in Brighton too! Let us introduce you to Cherry Jordan, co-founder of the Make It Flow Festival, here to talk about creative flow and comedy.

Imagine, you’re perched on a seat at Komedia, drink in hand, belly ready for a good chuckle. The lights dim, a comedian steps up, and suddenly the entire room hums with electric anticipation. Moments later, a punchline lands, laughter ripples through the crowd like a joyful wave, and—poof!—you’ve slipped into that delicious dimension we call “flow.”

“Flow”—in case you’ve been living under a rock that never giggles—is that glorious state of being fully here, right now, without a care in the world. It’s the sweet spot where you lose track of time because you’re so happily wrapped up in whatever you’re doing. Athletes feel it when they’re on a winning streak, dancers when they’re twirling like magic, and comedians when their set soars beyond the script. It’s where practice, presence, and a dash of daring alchemy collide.

Now, if there’s one place that knows how to tap into this dreamy dimension, it’s the Make It Flow Festival. Think of it as a big, friendly invitation to come out and play with creativity, mindfulness, and that oh-so-satisfying feeling of “being in the zone.”

Comedy, of course, is the secret sauce that makes flow extra spicy. Why? Because laughter breaks down all those tough-guy barriers we build up in our daily lives. Crack a joke and suddenly you’re not worrying about to-do lists, tomorrow’s meeting, or that text you forgot to send. Instead, you’re soaking up the right-here-right-now, hearts open, shoulders relaxed. A stand-up comedian at Komedia might start with a carefully rehearsed set, but when they hit their groove, it’s pure improv meets intuition. They’re riding the room’s energy, surfing the crowd’s reactions, and adjusting on the fly.

As an audience member, you get swept up too. Ever felt that moment when everyone in the crowd is perfectly in sync, sharing the same inhale before a laugh? That’s collective flow. It’s like your soul is having a silent party with a hundred strangers, celebrating the strange beauty of being human. You leave feeling lighter, brighter, and more connected.
