How Books and Laughter Keep Me Sane (Mostly)

Together with fellow local, independent business, Afrori Books, we’re celebrating Black stories in books and stand-up comedy – all in celebration of this year’s Black History Month theme ‘Reclaiming Narratives’. In this guest blog, Afrori Books founder Carolynn Bain introduces herself and her love for stories.

Hello lovely readers of Komedia’s blog! I’m Carolynn, the founder of Afrori Books—Brighton’s only Black-owned bookshop, and a place where we try to change narratives, one page at a time. When Komedia asked me to write a guest blog, I thought, “Why not?”. After all, if there’s one thing we need more of in life, it’s a good mix of books and laughter. And maybe cake. But let’s stick with books and laughter for now.

Afrori Books’ Origin

Running a bookshop wasn’t always my grand plan. In fact, Afrori Books started as a little idea to help people access books by Black authors. But like all good stories, it snowballed quickly, and before I knew it, I was knee-deep in boxes of books, wondering where the floor had gone. Spoiler: it’s still there, somewhere under a mountain of paperbacks.

You might think running a bookshop is all quiet corners and the smell of fresh pages. Let me tell you, it’s more like a fast-paced comedy show with a plot twist every five minutes. One minute you’re helping someone find a self-help book, and the next you’re explaining to a toddler why they absolutely cannot eat the display copy of Rainy Day Zoo. It’s a rollercoaster, but at least it keeps life interesting.

Life’s A Rollercoaster

Books are amazing, but you can’t run a shop without humour. I mean, who wouldn’t laugh when they find a kid using a Booker Prize-winning novel as a superhero cape? And that’s just on a Wednesday. Laughter has been a constant in this journey—mainly because, without it, I might have cried into a pile of unfinished manuscripts. But also, because books, like comedy, offer a wonderful way to make sense of this world.

At Afrori Books, we do more than just sell books. We host events, from serious discussions about race and equity to fun, relaxed singing sessions for mamas and their little ones.

Comedy and storytelling are such natural companions. They both help us see the world from different angles, connect with others, and, most importantly, get us through the tough times. That’s what I love about places like Komedia. It’s not just about a laugh; it’s about finding joy, sharing experiences, and leaving feeling a little lighter—whether you’ve just watched stand-up or heard a great new band.

We Love Brighton!

Brighton, by the way, is the perfect place for Afrori Books. It’s quirky, it’s colourful, and it’s filled with people who love both a delightful book and a good laugh. People often ask me what my favourite part of running Afrori is. It’s not the stock taking, I’ll tell you that. It’s the people. Meeting those who are as passionate about books as I am, and those who maybe don’t realise it yet—there’s nothing better. And if we can all have a laugh along the way? Even better.

So, whether you’re coming to Komedia for a night of comedy or popping by Afrori Books for your next great read, remember life’s too short to be serious all the time. Find joy where you can, and if you can’t, pick up a book—it’s the next best thing.

Thanks for having me on your blog, Komedia! Now, if you’ll excuse me, there’s a new delivery of books waiting. And I think I can hear The Rainy Day Zoo calling my name again…

See you all soon!
